Glenridding Flood Resilience Scheme

In response to the devastating floods at Glenridding in December 2015, we have worked with the EA to build a new floodwall.  This has involved working in the centre of a very busy village, amongst local stakeholders (hotels and businesses) who were adversely affected by the flooding.

As tourism is the life blood of this particular village it was essential that our activities did not have a negative impact on the commercial or leisure facillities of the village.

By liaising with the villagers on a face to face basis, publishing our programme on Parish notice boards we were able to identify ways to mitigate disruption. Sensitivity to the economic impact of the flood and also our works ensured that the village stakeholders were supportive.

One of the aspects of this scheme was its location within a sensitive catchment area. To this end, fish surveys were carried out to enable us to monitor any ecological impact and silt control was crucial.
